Job Attachment

Fun at Work!

The on-the-job training or the job attachment was a fun and exciting experience. It will definitely be one of the most memorable events of my secondary life.

I was assigned with my friend Edmond to Matador Country, a coffee shop. The staff there taught us a lot of interesting things and helped us in coping with the workload.

For six days, from the sixteenth to the twenty-first of December 2010, excluding Sunday, Edmond and I had daily shifts at the coffee shop from one to five p.m. We were given induction training by the manager of Matador, Mr. Hasan. He told us about coffee plants and its history, health benefits from coffee, and its import and export throughout the world. We also tried espresso, a black and bitter type of coffee.

The succeeding days were really fun and interesting. We were able to apply what we had learnt in the orientation. We also took orders from customers and we experienced preparing simple drinks. Each day, Edmond and I got to try different things. By the end of our training, we were able to prepare all of the foods and drinks in the menu.

It was such a memorable experience because we learnt a lot about restaurant business. We also had fun working with the staff of Matador Country that we wish it could have been a longer job attachment!

Working with Numbers

The week of the job attachment, 16th to 22nd of December 2010, had been one of my most memorable experience so far. I worked in Kumon, a tuition class specializing in Maths lessons. Even though it was a tuition class, what my partner and I did there wasn’t teaching the children. We instead checked and corrected the students’ work, but we were still shown what the students do in the class and we were informed of the rules in Kumon.

Our first day was spent mostly on being taught and trained on how to check the students’ assignments.
There were dozens of pages needed to be checked in a day, and from day to day, the amount of work needed to be done gradually increased. On our last day, we were shown the higher Maths and English classes too. I did not expect that sitting and checking all day would actually be very tiring, but I enjoyed my time working there. I  learnt many things, especially  the effective ways of teaching in Kumon.

It is certainly an unforgettable memory. I hope that by going through this job attachment, I will be guided on what I want to be in the future.

Scientist in Action!

We started our job attachment at a glove manufacturing company called ‘Shamrock Gloves’ last December 2010.The company is located at Namorambe Road Km 9, Medan. The office is a large grey building, with the factory located at the back along with laboratory, where we would work. In the first day of our work, we met with our supervisor, Ms. Maria. She is in - charge of the laboratory, and she manages all the personnels assigned in the laboratory. We were introduced to our co-workers and had a tour of the factory and our workplace.

During our job attachment we made filters using large sheets of filter papers and we also conducted various measurements using laboratory equipment. We also helped prepare the gloves for testing. We observed real-life scientists at work. We found out that the laboratory have new materials and gloves for experiments everyday. The laboratory also uses up a lot of filter paper in one day. We conducted similar experiments and prepared filter papers throughout our job attachment. We experienced how it is to work in a company.

I really enjoyed our job attachment, especially that is has something to do with Science and experiments. Watching scientists in action is priceless for me!

Could this be My Future Career?

Deciding for our future is very important. We should be sure that whatever career we will choose it will be the best for us. This is one of the objectives of having job attachments to different companies so we will have experience of how is it to be in a work place.

This year, my friends and I went for Job Attachment in several places in Medan. I would like to share to you about my experience during the Job Attachment. I had 5 days of working experience in Cambridge Mall Management Office and Control Room. We had to finish 40 hours of working time starting Wednesday, 15 December 2010 until Tuesday, 21 December 2010, excluding weekends.

Denny and I were interviewed and had orientation. We were then assigned by the IT Manager to stay in the Control Room. We learnt about the operating systems in the building and their functions.

We did corrections on the grammatical and spelling errors in Cambridge upcoming newsletter. We also were given the chance to design a stage for the singers. We were taught how to set up sound system.

One of the most interesting things we did was recording electricity, water and gas usage. Then, we recorded finance data. We also dealt with customers’ calls and complaints at the reception. I also translated letters to investors in English Language while Denny had the chance to help in setting up sound system.

On our last day, we arranged the pages of the newsletter and had our lunch in Sun Plaza. We did some reporting about the newsletter and had some heavy work. At 5 pm we said goodbye to them. We thanked them from the bottom of our hearts for all the learning and experience we had.

Having an experience there made me sure about my future career and made me realize that I need to study harder in order to achieve that dream.

My Unforgettable Experience

15 December 2010 was my first day of job attachment. I could say that when I woke up that morning, I felt really excited because I’ve never been in that type of activity before. I worked with Cindy I. and Gazza for a radio station company, Prambors 97.5 FM radio station.

Our job involved being a producer, announcer and live reporter. We researched for current events, and lastest information about popular stars to be announced by the radio announcers.

We learnt how to be alert, and how to manage our time during our work. Aside from that, we were taught how to encode songs, prepare daily playlist, make our own PSA (Public Service Announcement), input data, record quotes and how to do live reports. We were trained for about a day on how to be live reporters.

In Prambors, there is a program called “Street Force”. In this program, the reporter will visit a busy place and will choose some by standers and interview them live.

The best part of my experience was when I had the chance to do a live report. For my live report, I decided to visit Papa Ronz and interview the other trainees there. I was really nervous at first but as time passed by I became comfortable with it and I really had fun!

We have learnt so much! Job attachment should have been for a longer time so that we don’t have to say goodbye to our new friends too soon.
